SOMKINE LSR

SOMKINE LSR

Composition Esomeprazole 40 mg and Levosulpiride 75 mg Sustained Release Capsules
Description

Introduction

SOMKINE LSR is a prescription medicine containing Esomeprazole 40 mg and Levosulpiride 75 mg Sustained Release, a well-established combination used for the management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other acid-related gastrointestinal disorders associated with impaired gastric motility. The combination provides dual therapeutic action by reducing excessive gastric acid secretion while improving gastric emptying and upper gastrointestinal motility.

Esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), effectively suppresses gastric acid production, while Levosulpiride, a prokinetic agent, enhances gastric motility and increases lower esophageal sphincter tone, helping reduce acid reflux and improve gastric emptying. Together, these complementary mechanisms provide effective relief from heartburn, acid regurgitation, upper abdominal discomfort, bloating, and post-meal fullness.

When prescribed appropriately, SOMKINE LSR helps relieve symptoms, promotes healing of acid-related mucosal injury, and improves quality of life in patients with GERD and functional dyspepsia.

Uses of SOMKINE LSR

SOMKINE LSR is indicated for the treatment of acid-related gastrointestinal disorders, particularly when impaired gastric motility contributes to symptoms.

It may be prescribed for:

  1. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  2. Acid reflux and heartburn
  3. Functional dyspepsia
  4. Gastritis associated with excess gastric acid
  5. Acid-related indigestion
  6. Bloating and post-meal fullness associated with delayed gastric emptying
  7. Non-ulcer dyspepsia

Note: SOMKINE LSR should be used under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional and is not intended for immediate relief of acute heartburn.

Benefits of SOMKINE LSR

SOMKINE LSR combines a proton pump inhibitor with a prokinetic agent to address both excessive gastric acid secretion and impaired gastrointestinal motility.

Scientific benefits include:

  1. Effectively suppresses gastric acid secretion for sustained symptom relief.
  2. Helps relieve heartburn, acid regurgitation, and upper abdominal discomfort.
  3. Improves gastric emptying and enhances upper gastrointestinal motility.
  4. Increases lower esophageal sphincter pressure, helping reduce acid reflux episodes.
  5. Reduces post-meal fullness, bloating, and early satiety associated with delayed gastric emptying.
  6. Supports healing of acid-related esophageal and gastric mucosal injury.
  7. Once-daily formulation promotes convenient dosing and improved treatment adherence.

How SOMKINE LSR Works

SOMKINE LSR works through the complementary actions of Esomeprazole and Levosulpiride.

Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that irreversibly inhibits the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme (gastric proton pump) in gastric parietal cells. This markedly reduces gastric acid secretion, allowing healing of acid-related mucosal injury and relieving symptoms such as heartburn and acid regurgitation.

Levosulpiride is a selective dopamine D₂ receptor antagonist with prokinetic properties. It enhances gastric and intestinal motility, accelerates gastric emptying, and increases lower esophageal sphincter tone, reducing reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus.

Together, these complementary actions provide comprehensive management of GERD and dyspeptic symptoms by addressing both acid secretion and gastrointestinal motility disorders.

Dosage & Administration

SOMKINE LSR should be taken only under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.

General Adult Dosage

  1. The usual recommended dosage is one capsule once daily, or as prescribed by the treating physician.
  2. It should be taken on an empty stomach, preferably 30–60 minutes before breakfast.
  3. Swallow the capsule whole with water; do not crush, chew, or open the capsule.
  4. The duration of treatment depends on the patient's diagnosis and clinical response.
  5. Lifestyle modifications such as avoiding large meals, late-night eating, smoking, alcohol, and maintaining a healthy body weight may improve treatment outcomes.

Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, SOMKINE LSR may cause side effects, although many patients tolerate treatment well.

Commonly reported side effects include:

  1. Headache
  2. Nausea
  3. Diarrhea
  4. Abdominal pain
  5. Flatulence
  6. Dry mouth
  7. Dizziness
  8. Drowsiness

With prolonged use of Levosulpiride, some patients may develop elevated prolactin levels (hyperprolactinemia), which can result in breast enlargement, galactorrhea, menstrual irregularities, or changes in libido. Patients should consult their healthcare provider if these symptoms occur.

Contraindications & Precautions

SOMKINE LSR should not be used in patients with:

  1. Known hypersensitivity to Esomeprazole, Levosulpiride, substituted benzimidazoles, or any component of the formulation.
  2. Gastrointestinal bleeding, obstruction, or perforation.
  3. Pheochromocytoma.
  4. Epilepsy or seizure disorders.
  5. Prolactin-dependent tumors or hyperprolactinemia where Levosulpiride is contraindicated.

Important Precautions

SOMKINE LSR should be used with caution in patients with:

  1. Moderate to severe hepatic impairment.
  2. Renal impairment.
  3. Osteoporosis or other risk factors for fractures during long-term PPI therapy.
  4. Vitamin B₁₂ deficiency or hypomagnesemia during prolonged PPI treatment.
  5. Elderly patients.
  6. Pregnancy or breastfeeding, only if considered appropriate by the treating physician.

Patients should inform their healthcare provider about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal supplements they are taking, as clinically significant drug interactions may occur.
